Mist has two ways to use your voice:
  • Dictation turns what you say into text in the chat box. You read it over, then send it.
  • Voice conversation lets you talk with Mist out loud, hands-free. Mist answers out loud.
Both buttons are on the right of the chat box.

Allow microphone access

The first time you use your voice, your computer asks whether Fluid Mist can use the microphone. Allow it. If you denied access, Mist shows Microphone access was denied. On a Mac, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone, and turn on Fluid Mist. Mist only asks for the microphone. It never uses your camera.

Dictate a message

1

Start dictating

Click the microphone button, Start voice dictation.
2

Speak

Mist transcribes as you talk, and the text appears in the chat box.
3

Stop

Press Enter or click the button again to stop and keep the text. Press Esc to stop and discard it.
4

Send

Check the text, change it if you need to, then press Enter to send it.
A dictation can last up to 5 minutes.

Have a voice conversation

1

Start the conversation

Click the sound-wave button, Start voice conversation.
2

Talk

Speak normally. The status shows Listening… while Mist listens, Thinking… while it works and Speaking while it answers.
3

End it

Click End voice conversation, or press Esc when you aren’t typing.
While you talk, click Mute microphone to mute yourself, and Unmute microphone to turn it back on. When you ask for something that needs your company’s data or a change to your project, the voice conversation hands the request to Mist. Mist does the work, and the answer is read back to you. If the work takes longer than a minute, you hear that Mist is still working.

Talk to Mist from anywhere

Press Option+Space on a Mac, or Alt+Space on Windows, while Mist is running. A listening bar opens along the bottom of your screen. Say what you want. Mist sends it to the Mist panel, which opens from the Mist icon in your menu bar. Press Esc or the same shortcut to close the bar.

Limits

  • A voice conversation lasts up to 10 minutes.
  • A voice conversation needs the project to be on your computer. If it isn’t, Mist shows Download this project to your machine to talk it through.
  • You can’t have a voice conversation with a database.
  • You can’t dictate and have a voice conversation at the same time. Finish dictating first.

Frequently asked questions

Another app, such as a launcher, already uses that shortcut. When that happens, the shortcut doesn’t work in Mist, and Mist doesn’t show a message. Use the voice buttons in the chat box instead.
Yes. Dictation and voice conversations use AI models through your company’s AI account, the same as chat. See AI Spend.
